As a public utility we own a diverse mix of generation facilities – a good portion of which are renewable or carbon free – and others that are available at a moments notice to meet demand. Those facilities include solar, hydroelectric, wind, geothermal, and natural gas.
Since 2005, we’ve been an independent Balancing Authority, being granted that status from the Western Energy Coordinating Council. Being a Balancing Authority means we’re responsible to perform a balancing function in which we match our customers energy usage with our generation capacity on a moment-by-moment basis. In other words, we’re responsible to be sure that we can supply our customers with the energy they need at the moment they need it.
Balancing Authorities are also responsible for operating the transmission system, monitoring power lines to ensure they’re operating within the reliable limits of the system in addition to coordinating the operation with neighboring Balancing Authorities.
